Upper Antietam - May 31, 2018
Author Last Post
Dana V, Tim T and Wayne McD ran the Upper Antietam (Class 2) in three different types of craft - ducky, open canoe and kayak, respectively. Water level was at Ettinger's 3.2' canoe zero (376 cfs). A few more inches would have been appreciated in the shallow spots but we were able to navigate without undue difficulty. Many downed trees along the banks but the three bridges were largely clear of debris and we negotiated those without mishap. The high adrenaline moment occurred when a large wooden water slide (part of a summer camp operation) came hurtling down the slide structure on the bank and rocketed across the creek several feet in front of my kayak. I'd rate that a Class 3 river hazard. Observed the usual wildlife including a great blue heron who escorted us most of the way down the creek. We were off the river and driving home when the threatened rain finally arrived.
