Trip Reports

Northeast Branch to Anacostia
Author Last Post

After the rains, me and my wife went kayaking on the Northeast Branch on July 30 - not a usual river to do any type of boating. We entered the river above the Univ of MD on Metzerrot road at Acredale Park. It was an easy 50 foot walk to put into the river. The Riverdale river gauge showed 1.5 feet at the time, having dropped from a high of 7 feet two days before. You go by the Univ of MD, and through mostly wooded park lands for the first 2.5 miles - a rather pleasant shady trip. We had to portage 5 times due to downed trees and some areas unrunnable due to too many rocks. Some small Class I and maybe II rapids. After you pass East West Highway - the river becomes more channeled and you do not have any tree cover for the last mile or so until you go to the Bladensburg Marina to take out. All together, about a 4 mile trip which took us 3 hours due to the portages. Probably 1.5 feet as measured by the Riverdale gauge is the minimum you want to take this trip.
