Trip Reports

Sunday at Violettes -- 3.1 ft - 16 July 2017
Author Last Post
Just to keep focused on what the current brouhaha is all about - 11 of us set shuttle this morning at Pennyfield (to avoid the aquatic weeds in the C&O), then crossed the proposed free-fire zone - looking with unusual attention at how one might cross the Potomac below the Dam #2 line.  Level was 3.1 ft - so plenty of water in the GW rapids.

In the GW Canal entrance, Calleva had removed the clogging set of logs on the left (Barb found a passage on the right as well.)  Thank-you once again, Calleva.   A quiet but most attentive man gave us the fish-eye as we negotiated the passage.  After playing and instructing our fellows on the next several rapids we came to the diagonal one just before Jacuzzi, in which several logs and sticks were lodged at inconvenient places.  For later paddlers we stopped and wrestled out several river-stoppers - nothing like the Calleva's with their saws, but respectable nonetheless.

Once on the Potomac, a few of us practiced eskimo rolls and critiques.  Your reporter managed to lose his nose plug, bailed, and then attempted, with Barb's and Kathleen's help to remount his kayak using the celebrated Aronoff technique, imparted to the Thursday Group a couple of years ago.,  Problematic - needs more practice.

A beautiful sunny 80 degree day - we were Barb, Kathleen, Tim, Toni & Dave B, Bill Carr, Wayne, Ursy & Carter, Paul Schneider, and Alf.
