Trip Reports

Violettes Lock Loop - Sat., 18 Feb 2017
Author Last Post
Beautiful day.  Temps in 70's by the end of the trip.  Slightly cooler on the water.  Clear skies.  LF  gauge at 4.0'.  Eight Paddlers:  Tom Gray, Larry Lempert, Mark Brenneman, Jim McClave, Wayne McDaniel, Tim Tilson,  Alf Cooley, and myself.  Barbara Brown, unable to paddle due to prior commitments, stopped by Pennyfield to say hello and help with the shuttle.  It was my first time meeting Mark, Larry, Jim, and Tom- always good to meet new paddlers.

It was my first whitewater trip with the new dry suit.  Wayne and I can now appreciate what Harry Houdini did all those years ago as we had fun getting in and out of the dry suits.

We did not come back up the Canal as it was too low, esp at the top end.

At the put in at VL, saw two young fellows hop in their fishing kayaks (no helmet and wearing shorts- don't recall if they were wearing life jackets)- head down the Seneca Breaks in the main river.  As we crossed the main river, I noticed no flag up at the golf course- maybe Donald will raise the white flag.  At the GW Canal some of the rapids were washed out due to the level- but always great to get outside, especially in February.  A few hikers along the way.  Some of us surfed.  Jim did some rolls along the way- very nice form- make a video for me next time.

Nice conversation to break up the flat water down to Pennyfield- so much that I almost missed the little creek (Muddy Branch) at Pennyfield.  Excellent day for my first trip ever in February.  - Paul Schnneider
