Trip Reports

Anglers, Seneca Ck, THURS, 18 Aug

The Thursday paddlers had three trips on August 18th:
  • Ursy P and Carter H had the most memorable trip - "Beautiful day with the river rising from the glorious thunderstorm last night.   Carter and I put on at Anglers Inn around 11 AM.  The presence of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Squad and Cabin John River and Rescue squad power rafts reminded us that we had seen in yesterday’s newspaper about a person jumping in the river below Great Falls and disappearing.  We started downriver enjoying seeing cormorants,  ospreys, flying geese, a fawn by river’s edge.  Carter saw a large fish that jumped when it saw him.  Then we also saw after we rounded the corner  in an eddy on water’s edge above Offutt  Island Rapid the body of the young man.   Vultures had arrived and were very interested.  Carter chased the vultures  away and remained on guard while I paddled back unto Anglers Inn  to tell the rescue squads that we had found the body.   Eventually they motored down and relieved Carter of his watch. Thank goodness the rest of the day remained less eventful."
  • Meanwhile, Bob D, David & Toni B, John S and Tim T helped Wayne McD escort his grandson, Scott (14), in a rec kayak through the GW Canal and down to Pennyfield. Routine trip with no carnage.
  • In another grandson trip Ron K reports that "Grandson Trent (6) and Granddad Ron (not saying) ran a very short but lively section of Seneca Creek from Rt. 118 (Germantown Road) to Black Rock Mill.  The creek was comfortably high and fast, so the actual paddling time for the ~1.2 miles was only about 25 minutes.  Walking the shuttle on the river right trail took about twice that much time, but was part of the fun.  Worst aspect:  you have to walk about 1/4 mile along Rt. 118 in an area with no shoulder and fast traffic."
